Characteristics

Plant at first ovate, attached by a cuneate base and a stalk about 1 mm. long; later widely expanded, irregular, to 4 dm. or more in diameter, delicate; regularly clathrate, the opening generally 0.5 - 1.5 cm. but reaching 6 cm. diam.; cells of the blade angular, 18 - 36 µ diam., containing one, seldom 2, chromatophores which nearly cover the face of the cell and contain one, rarely 2, pyrenoids; thickness of the blade 30 - 60 µ; in section cells subequal to broader than tall, thin walled laterally, but the outer membranes 1.5 - 3.0 µ thick; cells bounding the openings transversely elongate, reaching surface diameters of 18 x 72 µ or more.
